Ellie calf pair to blow their trumpets

My two little studies of Paseka, that I posted recently, caught the eye of the Artist and Illustrator Magazine Editor. He has asked me to write a short article about the duo. Really pleased they seem to be creating interest already. I am in the process of putting the article together now and will post a publication date when I have it.

What is the exhibition all about?

I first met Dr Kate Evans of Elephants For Africa, back in 2007, and was invited by her to have an exhibition of my work to raise funds and awareness for their work in Botswana. In 2011 the project finally got underway when I visited the research camp for a month on a field trip to gather reference in the form of photos, in situ sketches, plein airs and personal experiences. From these vital first hand references I am now building up a body of work for the exhibition, which we hope will be in 2015 at the fabulous Nature in Art Museum and Art Gallery in Gloucestershire. The exhibition will not only show paintings done as a result of that trip, but also some of the photo's and plein airs done whilst in Botswana. The idea being to form a visual experience of my time there showing the wildlife, environment and the work of the researchers with the elephants as the element that ties it all together.

The exhibition is now open.

Elephants For Africa

Elephants For Africa is a conservation research charity Founded and Directed by Dr Kate Evans, in 2007, based on research that started in 2002. Their research work is carried out in Botswana and at the time of my visit they were based in the Okavango Delta; they have now moved down to the Makgadikgadi Pans to document the new elephant movements there.

The research work focuses on young bull elephants and their integration into adult bull society after leaving their natal herds and works to create and advise on better living conditions and welfare practices for captive elephants.

They also run a scholarship program to train Botswana nationals in the conservation field and an outreach education program enabling local Botswana children to see and learn about elephants in a positive way, rather than just in human-elephant conflict situations.
